The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ), based at the University of San Diego, hosts the award-winning Women PeaceMakers Program, which selects women leaders from conflict zones around the world for a two-month residency to document their stories and best practices of defending human rights and building peace in their communities. Building upon the program’s 12-year history of hosting the Women PeaceMakers residency, convening international working conferences, and working with the program’s alumnae network from over 35 countries, the institute is expanding its programmatic work in women, peace and security.

Launched in November 2014, the institute is working with its Women PeaceMakers and partners, including the Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers, on Defying Extremism – a series of regional dialogues to facilitate understanding and develop strategic partnerships between religious leaders, women’s rights activists, policymakers, donors and the security sector on countering violent extremism.
